アンコールはサンスクリット語で「町、都城」を、ワットは「寺院」を表す。
人々はアンコール・ワットを中心に、ここをひとつの宇宙世界と考えていた。

Angkor Wat is a famous temple. It was built by the Khmer King suryavarman II
in the early 12th century in Yasodharaqurq, the capital of the Khmer empire,
as his state temple and eventual mausoleum breaking from the shaivism tradition of
previous king, Angkor Wat was instead dedicated to Vishnu.

アンコール朝約６００年の中頃、１１１３年に即位したスールヤヴァルマン２世が
造営した寺院で信仰するヴィシュヌ神に捧げた寺院であり、自らの墳墓でもあります。
